Manager, Land Acquisition
About Us
At Verogy, our mission is to "Impact Positive Change" for our clients, employees, and the environment. We operate based on a set of core values focused on driving positive, productive, and inclusive behavior. Our commitment to excellence and innovation drives us to design, develop, and implement cutting-edge solar projects that make a tangible impact on the environment and the communities we serve.
Your Impact
The Manager, Land Acquisition on the Business Development Team will spearhead the effort to secure site control of properties in new and upcoming valuable markets identified by Verogy (collaboratively with your input) for renewable energy development. Some of the developing markets that this position will oversee are expected to include Pennsylvania, Maryland, and other Mid-Atlantic US states. This role will involve employing a variety of tactics to contact, engage, build relationships, and finalize land deals with landowners. The individual in this role will also create and leverage self-sourced landowner relationships through engagement tactics.
Once landowners are engaged, this role will include building a strong rapport with landowners through consistent communication, site visits, and negotiations to secure lease or purchase options for the development. After obtaining a fully executed lease or purchase option, the Manager of Land Acquisition will manage the pass-off process with the internal Pre-NTP team and stay involved with the project alongside the Pre-NTP to assist where necessary.
This position is mostly remote, with preferred residency in the Mid-Atlantic region wherein the employee is prosecuting land acquisition. The role will also require periodic travel to different site locations as well as to the Verogy headquarters in West Hartford, CT (approximately 1 day a quarter).
This is an opportunity for an experienced business development professional with deep ties to solar (and preferably also within booms and busts segment) to develop and lead your own portfolio of development targets, act as a brand ambassador for a well-respected and emerging developer in these target markets and expand your base of relationships within the solar industry.
Your Role:
- Lead the process for developing target lists and prioritizing outreach efforts.
- Contact and engage target landowners: calling, texting, emailing, networking/social networking, and visiting landowner’s properties or places of work.
- Lead negotiations with landowners to secure lease or purchase options.
- Work closely with the Verogy Development Team, Design and Permitting Team, and Legal Team to keep target lists and new business projections updated, run site analyses, develop conceptual designs, and draft agreements for landowners.
- Communicate with Development Team to provide updates on landowner engagement and negotiation support.
- Obtain all necessary documentation to close deals and hand off completed deals to the Pre-NTP team.
- Make site-specific and strategic recommendations for early-stage development.
- Utilize Salesforce as the CRM tool for pipeline management, ensuring accurate and up-to-date data entry for all customer interactions and sales activities.
- Leverage systems such as Transect, Anderson Optimization and other lead generation tools to identify and qualify new land acquisition leads.
What You’ll Bring:
- 5+ years of related experience, preferably as a land agent or in a site acquisition role in markets that have experienced booms and busts.
- Proven track record of success in engaging landowners and negotiating option agreements or leases.
- Self-motivated with an entrepreneurial mindset and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to build strong and genuine rapport with landowners and a natural curiosity about people.
- Comfortable with regular travel to meet landowners (2-3 days a week is likely).
- Knowledge of solar regulations in markets such as PA, MD, NY, NJ, MA, IL, and ME.
- Connections within agricultural communities are a plus.
