What We Can Achieve Together:

The Postdoctoral Climate Modeling Scientist will work as part of the Global Science Team for The Nature
Conservancy (TNC). The Postdoctoral Scientist will provide technical and scientific support for The
Nature Conservancy’s One Conservancy Science Plan, which is investing in science across the organization to achieve TNC’s 2030 Goals for people and nature. This position will be focused on climate hazards to people and nature, under Global Science’s Accelerating Impact Fund (AIF) grant.

This position will report to the Applied Climate Modeling Scientist on the Climate Science team (one of the 5 Science lines in the Global Science team). The AIF project seeks to embed information on climate hazards, socio-economic vulnerability, and adaptation costs into three regional strategies (Kenya, the
Dominican Republic, and Colombia) in TNC. The Postdoctoral Fellow will play a critical role in analyzing and projecting national and sub-national climate patterns by downscaling global and regional climate model outputs to quantify climate hazards such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, storm surge and sea level rise. Your work will contribute to understanding the impacts of climate change at a local scale and will contribute to vulnerability assessments and adaption planning for local communities.

Climate Modeling Scientist reviews and synthesizes scientific literature to identify critical research questions related to TNC’s 2030 Goals including people, global climate change and biodiversity. The
Postdoctoral Scientist will analyze climate data, apply downscaling methods, write reports, and develop proposals to support conservation efforts. The Postdoctoral Scientist will have a track record of research, publication, and application of climate data and projections to climate adaptation and resilience planning across multiple sectors and geographies; be familiar with the latest global climate models, regional climate models, statistical and/or dynamic downscaling techniques, and associated datasets; be experienced in quantitative analyses and modeling; and enjoy working across a variety of geographic regions and applications. The Postdoctoral Scientist will collect, manage, and analyze data and write up findings for peer-reviewed publications. The Postdoctoral Scientist will may also administer and coordinate conservation activities and project management to inform programs within the Global
Science business unit and scientific research. The Postdoctoral Scientist may contribute to grant writing and other fundraising activities

This is a 2-year term limited position with the possibility of a one-two year extension based on performance, deliverables, and funding opportunities. The location for this position is flexible to all locations where The Nature Conservancy is registered to do business. Arlington, VA is where TNC's headquarters is located. No relocation, immigration or visa assistance is available with this position and the successful candidate will have authorization to work within the country where they are located.

The climate modeling postdoc Responsibilities & Scope include:

  • Review and synthesize relevant scientific literature.
  • Manage and analyze data and write up findings for peer reviewed publications.
  • Deliver tools, data, analytical support, field services and training to staff and partners.
  • Develop visualizations for communicating research results.
  • Contribute to grant writing and other fundraising efforts.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Ph.D. in climate science related field awarded by start of the position (and no longer than 5 years prior) and 1 to 2 years of related experience.
  • Fluency in Python, R, NetCDF, MATLAB and/or other relevant computing programs and languages
  • Experience in analyzing, interpreting and applying observational climate data, global or regional cli- mate model projections, and scenarios.
  • Experience in the development and application of high-resolution climate projections from dynamical and/or empirical statistical downscaling models to inform climate impact assessments and climate adaptation and resilience planning across a broad range of sectors and geographies.
  • Demonstrated ability in identifying the most appropriate climate inputs, including observations and model projections, for use in projects that span a broad range of sectors, resources, and geographies.
  • Experience collating, manipulating, analyzing and interpreting scientific data.
  • Strong writing and communication skills in English.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience will be prioritized.
  • Fluency in Python
  • Experience integrating climate data with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based tools, such as

ArcGIS and ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, GRASS, and other similar tools.

  • Experience reviewing and synthesizing relevant scientific literature.
  • Experience in teaching or developing training materials and workshops related to helping non- experts understand climate modeling, vulnerability assessments, and/or adaptation planning concepts.
  • Experience with grant writing or other fundraising efforts.
  • Experience that demonstrates attention to detail.
  • Experience working collaboratively across multiple stakeholders, including non-scientists.
  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • Independent and self-motivated with the ability to participate effectively in a remote team environment.
