Position Summary

Were you ever inspired by a naturalist you met as a child? Or taught by a family member about the changing sounds of Spring? Now it is your turn to be that inspiration for today's youth. This position entails working with several education staff to introduce Alaskan school students to the Kenai Fjords National Park. Part of the season will also be spent learning about the art of interpretation in order to engage park visitors.

Schedule

April 22, 2025 - September 30, 2025

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Early and late season duties include working in classrooms and in the field at Exit Glacier and at a marine intertidal area with students.

Summer season involves programming with Road Scholar programs and youth groups and giving interpretive programs to visiting public. During this part of the season, you will develop a walk that takes groups of the public around the trails at Exit Glacier and engages them with the landscape the glacier has left behind.

There will be time at our Nature Center and Visitor Center desks interacting with the public and providing them with information and maps of the park. There will be a steady throng of junior rangers excited to earn their badge at the park. You will get excited with them and “swear them in” as new Junior Rangers.

The selected candidate will work with a group of local teens to mentor them in National Park Service Youth Conservation Corps programs. These local high school students are potentially future rangers, and good mentoring can go a long way to get them excited about the ideals of the National Park Service.

You will also have the opportunity to assist with our social media for the park.

Marginal Duties

For the candidate that is motivated and enthusiastic about education there is an opportunity to build a program from scratch. Bring your expertise and we'll provide interested students and friendly, inspired co-workers.
