Forest Birds Individual Placement at Haleakala National Park

Position Summary

Please read: This position has a preference for local candidates already residing in Hawaii. Park housing is limited and based on availability.


This position is with the Forest Bird Program at Haleakalā National Park on Maui, HI. As a member of the team, this placement will work alongside Park staff to manage endangered forest birds, including ‘ākohekohe and kiwikiu.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Primary duties would include collecting and analyzing acoustic data from autonomous recording units, collecting direct observations of endangered forest birds, and aiding in additional management activities for the benefit of forest birds (weed management, invasive predator control) with other projects within the Integrated Resources Management Division.


Marginal Duties

This position will also assist with public outreach programs including hikes for the public to provide education on forest birds and other resources in the park.


Required Qualifications

Must be in excellent physical condition, able to hike over uneven terrain while carrying up to 40 pounds. Willing and able to camp in remote locations for up a week at a time.


This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.


Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of the endemic birds of Maui.


Hours

40 per week


Living Accommodations

Housing is not provided. Applicants must have their own housing on Maui.


Compensation

$450/week living allowance

$1,300 travel allowance

$1,000/month housing allowance

$2,375 duty-related reimbursements

AmeriCorps eligible

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
