Internship - Fish Hatchery Intern at Green Lake National Fish Hatchery
Position Summary
The selected intern will participate in rearing endangered Atlantic salmon at a cold-water conservation hatchery in Maine.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Duties include collecting biological samples for disease screening, feeding adult and juvenile fish, cleaning rearing units, conducting monthly growth monitoring of juvenile and adult salmon, maintaining automated feeders, assisting in moving, sorting and grading juvenile salmon, PIT tagging future broodstock, spawning, egg enumeration and care, electrofishing, and stocking multiple life stages of Atlantic salmon. The selected intern will also participate in daily maintenance activities at the hatchery which include grounds maintenance, hiking trail maintenance, hatchery equipment repair, and other general maintenance projects. Green Lake National Fish Hatchery (NFH) is open to the public year-round and interns will have the opportunity to interact with visitors by giving tours of the facility or providing other outreach services. The selected intern may also have the opportunity to participate in monitoring lake water quality and adult sea-run broodstock collection. The selected intern will work cooperatively with personnel from both Green Lake NFH and Craig Brook NFH, the Maine Fishery Resources Office, the State of Maine, various non-government agency partners, and hatchery volunteers.
Required Qualifications
• Interest in conservation and fish culture • Commitment to learning new skills and supporting team initiatives • Ability to work in challenging outdoor conditions that will include heat, extreme cold, high winds, and precipitation • Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day and lift and/or move 40 pounds or more • Ability to work in water and to tolerate working in cold water for prolonged periods of time
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
Must be available for the full position term (start and end dates are not flexible).

Living Accommodations
Housing is provided at Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery in a 3 bedroom/1 bath house. Intern will be required to commute to Green Lake National Fish Hatchery each day for work. The hatcheries are 20 miles apart and the intern will be provided with a weekly commuting allowance to cover the commuting expense.
Compensation
• $375 - weekly living allowance • $42 – weekly commuting allowance • $1,100 – relocation travel grant • AmeriCorps Education Award – eligible for $5,176 Award *All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes
