Position Summary

The Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest (MBSNF), in western Washington, is hosting a two-person invasive species field crew through Student Conservation Association. Incumbents will work in a small team to document and treat invasive species throughout the Forest in support of Forest projects and the botany program. Much of the summer will be spent at project sites and will require overnight travel and the use of government vehicles. These positions are based out of the Darrington Ranger Station in Darrington, Washington.

April 16, 2025 - September 9, 2025

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct invasive species treatments and mapping across the forest on a variety of projects; Record infestation information and treatment applications in the national database using GIS technologies; Conduct overnight travel of about 3 days a week across the Forest while camping near project sites;

Marginal Duties

Maintain Invasive Species Program equipment and operate FS vehicles; Opportunities to work with other FS programs including but not limited to botany, wildlife, fisheries, and timber; Assist in mapping natural resources via drone as part of the MBSNF Unmanned Aerial Systems (aka: Drones) program;

Required Qualifications

  • Must have a valid driver's license

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduates with degrees in a related field
  • Experience with invasive plant identification
  • Current or past licensed herbicide applicators

40 per week

Living Accommodations

Housing is available and paid for by the FS at the Darrington Ranger Station in Darrington, WA.

Compensation

  • $1,200- one time RT travel allowance (paid on 1st payroll after position starts)
  • $435 + $65 (Serve WA funds)- weekly living allowance (paid bi-weekly)
  • $500 monthly housing allowance (to be paid to USFS through & bill collections) for on-site housing
  • $1,700 Duty-Related Travel & Other Reimbursable Expenses (Receipt required for reimbursement) for field camping (May-Sept)
  • AmeriCorps eligible ($2,817 education award). Must serve a minimum of 675 hours or more.
  • All Weather Uniform Package

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
