Visitor Service Participant at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge

Position Summary

This internship will focus on the Visitor Services Program at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, located on the historic and scenic Eastern Shore of Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay.

Schedule

May 19, 2025 - August 15, 2025

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Assist with the design and development of interpretive materials, including flyers, brochures and/or wayside exhibits; Provide educational and interpretive programs to the public; Assist with refuge outreach through social media and other outlets; Complete inventory of refuge signs and locations using a mobile app.

Marginal Duties

Trail maintenance work.

Required Qualifications

  • Driver license
  • Personal vehicle required
  • Competence in customer service without constant supervision
  • Be comfortable talking to members of the public
  • Have a desire and some experience with trail maintenance
  • Be willing and able to work with children.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong interpretive writing and graphic design skills are essential. Outdoor work is in marsh and forest communities in hot, humid conditions with numerous biting insects. Intern must possess a valid driver's license, have good communication and organizational skills, the ability to work well with others, and live in close quarters with others.

Hours

40 per week

Living Accommodations

  • Housing provided on site.

Compensation

  • Weekly living allowance: $600 / week
  • One-time travel allowance: $1,100 (personal vehicle required)
  • Public Land Credits are available upon successful completion of this term for members ages 18-30

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
