Internship-Cultural Resources Intern
Position Summary
Come help the Bureau of Land Management in Anchorage, Alaska preserve our amazing cultural resources! This internship will be focused on cultural resource preservation and Section 110 and 106 compliance. Primary focuses are expected to be the resources associated with the Iditarod National Historic Trail (INHT), the Campbell Tract WWII Historic District, and the Carter Spit Area of Critical Environmental Concern.
The BLM, Anchorage Field Office manages 23 million acres of public lands, mostly in western Alaska on the Yukon-Kuskokwim River Delta and around Norton Sound. The Field Office includes the Alaska Range, forest, tundra, muskeg bogs, the Unalakleet National Wild and Scenic River, and the Iditarod National Historic Trail. It also includes the Campbell Tract Special Recreation Management Area, a 730 acre recreation area adjacent to Anchorage.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Primary focuses are expected to be the resources associated with the Iditarod National Historic Trail (INHT), the Campbell Tract WWII Historic District, and the Carter Spit Area of Critical Environmental Concern. The intern will help survey and document sites in these areas, and prepare determinations of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. The intern will also work on file management for the BLM's digitization effort. This internship will be based in Anchorage but will also involve fieldwork in remote areas of Alaska, dependent on funding; small plane and helicopter travel are expected. The intern will prepare survey and monitoring reports from these trips.
Marginal Duties
The intern may work on Section 106 compliance projects, depending on demand. Possibility of collateral work with BLM GIS specialists, Iditarod Trail Coordinator, outdoor recreation planner, and education specialists at the Campbell Creek Science Center.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must possess basic archaeological and GIS skills. Advanced research and writing skills are also required.
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.
Preferred Qualifications
BA in Anthropology
Archaeological Field School
Experience with ArcGIS and Microsoft Office
Previous experience with backcountry work and firearms

Living Accommodations
No housing is provided. Candidates must possess their own housing in the Anchorage, AK area or be able to obtain it. Anchorage is a beautiful city that is a gateway to the Alaskan wilderness and possesses many recreational opportunities- including camping, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking- within an hour of the city. As a diverse city, Anchorage also has a thriving art, theater, music, and restaurant scene.
Compensation
$700 - weekly living allowance $1,000 - one time RT travel allowance $1,112 - monthly housing allowance (9 months) - $4,782 reimbursements for duty travel and duty-related gear - receipts required
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
