Role Summary:
An exciting opportunity to join Rivian’s Battery Mechanical Core Design Team for new vehicle programs. We’re looking for a highly motivated, multi-disciplined, mechanical design engineer with sound design experience using first principles. This role will allow the engineer to take a design from concept and prototyping to ramp and launch in high volume series production. This role would focus on the full product development lifecycle of the battery module assembly. You will work cross-functionally to execute this responsibility with various cross functional teams such as Manufacturing, Vehicle Integration, Battery Systems Engineering, Mechanical Design and Analysis (thermal and structural).
Responsibilities:
  • Own full product development, design, and delivery for various components from concept to production and ramp.
  • Advancing product performance while driving down cost and mass.
  • Deliver high quality CAD models working cross functionally with interfacing components.
  • Deliver high quality drawings including GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • Develop component technical specifications and requirements to ensure product functionality.
  • Develop structural and thermal performance requirements and load cases.
  • Work directly with CAE team to define and submit simulation requests as needed for design validation and correlation with tests for both thermal CFD and structural FEA.
  • Lead weekly supplier meetings to ensure the timely delivery of components to meet vehicle program.
  • Work with Supply Chain to quote and source production suppliers.
  • Develop component DFMEA and DVP&R.
  • Meet cost and mass targets to meet system level requirements.
  • Develop timing and delivery plans for components within the Battery System.
  • Management of part maturities meeting development program requirements and milestones.
  • Manage PLM component attribute data in Enovia.
  • Manage and conduct component design reviews for each part in the Battery System.
  • Support prototype builds to execute development testing and support development vehicle program.
  • Work with suppliers on component DFM to reduce cost and improve quality and reliability.
  • Work with Manufacturing team on system and component DFA to improve manufacturability.
Qualifications:
  • Strong Engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, fluids, mechanics and electronics.
  • 5+ years industry experience or 3+ years with master’s degree.
  • CATIA V6 (3DX or equivalent) required.
  • Experience in designing for high volume assembly, both manual and automated
  • Experience working with vehicle team integrating product in vehicle.
  • Design experience for plastic injection molding, metallic stamping and forming, casting, extrusion, and composite layup.
  • Design experience with HVDS (high voltage distribution systems/busbars) components.
  • Design experience for joining methods such as: welding, brazing, adhesives, and fasteners.
  • Experience with release engineering including CAD design, GD&T, and PLM interface.
  • Strong oral and written communication for supplier engagement, program timing, and project management.
  • Experience with automotive DVP&R cycle, requirements management, and issue problems solving.

Preferred Skills and Competencies
  • Experience with automotive powertrain requirements, load cases, and standards.
  • Expereince with high voltage systems, HVDS, power electronics and/or propulsion systems.
  • Strong fluids and thermodynamics background with working knowledge of energy conversion and heat transfer.
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion cell chemistries and form factors.
  • Understanding of battery system architectures, system controls, and circuit analysis.
Pay Disclosure:
Salary Range for California Based Candidates: $137,800.00 - $172,200.00 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
