Sr. Lead, Construction, Risk Management

This position is a key collaborator that assists and supports a Capital Project Delivery organization with managing risk. It is responsible for ensuring project teams understand and utilize risk management tools to plan, assess, document, and report significant risks to the project or beyond. This role is critical in identifying project elements that present risk to completing projects on budget and on schedule. Risks identified may be internal or external with implications well beyond cost or schedule including safety, environmental, strategic, legal, political, or other implications.
A certain level of risk is inherent to any major capital program. The risk management subject matter expert must recognize and help mitigate the level of exposure the organization potentially absorbs. The role is responsible for considering more than the financial implications of all project activities. The role is also strategic in its support to help stakeholders see across multiple capital projects and/or programs that may be in progress by the capital delivery organization.
In addition, the Risk Manager may conduct and facilitate internal and external audits to identify, evaluate, disclose, and appropriately remedy risks and deficiencies. Finally, the risk manager may be needed to help prepare document packages for regulatory submissions or assist with internal and external inspections and audits. May also serve as point of contact for interactions with regulatory agencies for defined matters.
- Responsible for managing and coordinating risk on the project.
- Provide training and guidance to project team members on risk management principles and best practices.
- Formulate a detailed risk management plan outlining strategies for risk mitigation, acceptance, or transfer.
- In concert with project management, conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential threats and opportunities related to the project across each of its phases.
- Collaborate with relevant teams to integrate risk management into overall project planning.
- Collaborate with senior project management personnel, including project team members, project managers, engineers, and contractors, to gather input on potential risks.
- Manage project risk log in collaboration with key project management and supporting personnel
- Analyze identified risks to determine their potential impact on project or program objectives.
- Assess the likelihood and severity of each risk and prioritize them based on their significance.
- Assist the PM and regularly communicate risk-related information to project stakeholders, ensuring transparency and awareness.
- Prepare and present comprehensive risk reports to project leadership, highlighting key risk factors and proposed mitigation measures.
- Help implement risk mitigation strategies as outlined in the risk management plan.
- Work closely with project teams to monitor and control identified risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in risk management, Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related subject plus a minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible construction industry experience.
- Considerable experience successfully implementing risk management strategies and programs across all phases of a project or program life cycle.
- Experience working with key internal stakeholders at many levels and outside project-delivery organization(s)
- Ideal candidates would hold documented training, licenses, and/or certifications in at least one of the following areas:
- Formal Project Delivery and/or Construction Risk Management training
- Project Delivery Risk Management
- Process Safety Management
- Environmental Risk Management and/or Remediation Experience
- Construction Safety Risk Management
- Formal Project Delivery and/or Construction Risk Management training
- Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS)
- Project Management Institute RMP and/or PMP
- Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst
- Certified Risk Management Professional (CRMP) or other recognized Risk Management Certification
