GIS Developer/Data Scientist
Position summary:
At the Rainforest Alliance, we are looking for a collaborative and results-oriented Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Developer to strengthen our team in providing spatial analytics and geo-oriented application support. It also includes supporting Senior GIS officers and managers with the development of a wide range of geo-data-oriented products, services and analyses for internal and external stakeholders.
Role includes performing spatial data analytics, including Remote Sensing model-building, as well as support to DevOps for the development and maintenance of GIS applications/services, data models, and API integrations.
Responsibilities:

- Work within a team to develop and implement GIS model solutions to enhance spatial data capabilities
- Maintain and develop knowledge in RS and other GIS specialist areas
- GIS development for own and Business needs to support Commercial and/or Open-Source solutions.
- Develop custom GIS applications using Python for geospatial data processing and automation (e.g., ArcGIS API for Python, ArcPy, PyQGIS, Geopandas, Shapely, and Rasterio)
- Build interactive mapping tools using frameworks like Leaflet, Mapbox, or ArcGIS API for Python.
- Implement APIs and web services (e.g., REST, OGC standards) to deliver geospatial functionality.
- Develop workflows that integrate GIS data into automated systems, using Azure /AWS Pipelines for continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD).
- Validate and analyse GIS data to produce dashboards and (web)maps for internal projects and initiatives
- Create and maintain geo-databases using platforms like PostgreSQL, Oracle Spatial, or SQL Server.
- Contribute to GIS data maintenance and processing to support owners/stewards and ensure data are well-versioned, documented and stored in the system.
- Provide technical support and guidance for the development or troubleshooting of systems.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience in GIS with a solid focus in quantitative data-analytics, preferably in an (enterprise) environment, ideally ArcGIS; or master’s degree or equivalent in Informatics, Biology, Conservation, Land-Water management, Agriculture, or related field.
- Strong proficiency in GIS software and libraries (e.g., ArcGIS API for JavaScript, Leaflet, OpenLayers). Familiar with GitHub, Azure pipelines.
- Experience with spatial databases, (geo)data management/processes and query languages like SQL/PostGIS/PostgreSQL.
- Familiarity with open geospatial standards (OGC, WMS, WFS).
- Experience with web development frameworks (e.g. React, Angular, Django, Flask).
- Strong knowledge of programming languages such as Python and HTML/CSS.
- Solid experience in spatial analytics in ArcGIS or QGIS environment, and Google Earth Engine for remote sensing analytics.
- Experience with metadata management in an ArcGIS Enterprise for Kubernetes, ArcGIS Online environment
- Ability to understand and analyse data in various formats, aggregate information and report on trends and findings.
- Ability to work in a cross-functional, multi-cultural team with members in different parts of the world.
- Strong personal ethics and integrity and commitment to upholding the rules and values of the Rainforest Alliance; an accurate, analytical, quality-conscious attitude is a must have.
- Fluency in English is a requirement.
