Staff Battery Engineer, Renewable ESS

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Future Energy Technology Center (FETC) is looking for a Staff Battery Engineer who specializes in battery technology development. As the Battery subject matter expert, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our company's product portfolio in the exciting realm of battery storage applications. You will be the go-to expert for both engineering and upper management, providing deep technical knowledge and strategic vision.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as the main battery SME for both the engineering community as well as the upper management.
- Develop and maintain the advanced technology roadmap of battery/electric storage applications within the company’s product portfolio, working with relevant cross-functional teams. Develop and implement accelerated test methods to characterize and improve performance and lifetime, at the cell, pack, and system level.
- Lead the evaluation of new and innovative ESS technologies for potential commercial value, by conducting proof-of-concept testing and feasibility assessment for new battery technologies and application areas.
- Utilize and apply various battery performance models to derive system performance and broaden the selection opportunities for new applications
- Support electrochemical testing by writing test protocols, troubleshooting and resolving failures, and maintaining cells & modules on test Support Pack sizing, DFMEA, mechanical, fitment, and thermal system interactions.
- Lead safety compliance tests, HW/SW performance, and failure analysis, especially in the development of new laboratory processes and module teardown procedures Defining and leading Pack requirements and system interactions from safety standpoint.
- Support cross-functional engineering teams on battery management system (BMS) design, power electronics system design, and packaging.
- Develop project plans, prioritize tasks, and provide regular project updates.
- Partner with the Technology Strategy team to actively scout for external funding opportunities in the domain area and provide input in the development of project proposals. Work with internal and external partners in execution of long-term externally funded R&D projects.
- Network across the organization to identify and communicate opportunities to assess and apply next gen technology to product/services portfolio.
- Expected to travel, up to 15%
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BS or advanced degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field to batteries and ESS.
- 10+ years of directly related experience in battery subsystems design, development, and test
- Excellent technical and product knowledge in electrical storage and battery technologies, selection, and qualification, with the ability to consolidate and communicate learnings to drive strategy that addresses business needs.
- Strong knowledge in performance tradeoffs based on different material types and grades. Understanding of the battery failure modes, and associated root cause analysis, second life, and circularity analysis.
- Experience in the thermal of Li-Ion battery (LFP, NMC, NCA..) manufacturing, design characteristics, and safety compliance testing (UL 9540A and 1973).
- Experience in battery modeling (such as MATLAB) and familiarity with the application of models to system design. Experience with prototyping, testing, modeling, and validating battery performance. Strong understanding of all types of battery testing (electrochemical, abuse, thermal, etc.)
- Demonstrated success as a team leader and strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills in providing key technical inputs to other teams and ability to define technology strategies aligned with the corporate goals and with inputs from multiple stakeholders
- Experience in supplier collaboration experience and oversight generating specifications and statements of work (SOW) and cost estimates of complete ESS solutions including costs for BoM, manufacturing, NRE, etc.
- Experience in business development and technology road mapping
The salary range is required by the California Pay Transparency Act and may differ depending on the location of those candidates hired nationwide. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to, skill set, education, licenses and certifications, essential job duties and requirements, and the necessary experience relative to the job’s minimum qualifications.
