ECU Hardware Design Engineer
Overview:
Nikola is looking for an experienced and proven ECU Hardware Design Engineer to manage the design of low voltage high speed digital, mixed signal and analog circuits, architecture, requirements, and functions.
Responsibilities: You will:
- Hardware Design responsible
- Schematic design and release.
- PCB Design.
- Component selection and management.
- Mechanical Design responsible
- Enclosure design for ECUs.
- Review Thermal and Sealing Analysis.
- Component Design Release and Validation.
- Define, execute and manage Design Validation Plans.
- Define, execute and manage Product Validation Plans.
- Manage 3rd party Labs relationships for execution of these plans.
- DRE Responsible
- Review and release documentation to 3rd party suppliers (proto-shops, contract manufacturers, laboratories, etc).
- Owns Launch and sustainability with Coolidge.
- Maintain Part Number progression, 3DX and Catia.
- Responsible for Change Management (CRs, CAs, DVNs).
- Responsible for Jira Tickets management related to ECUs.
- Champion for troubleshooting ECU-related issues until Root Cause is confirmed.
- Manage Contract Manufacturers and Suppliers relationship for PCBA, Final Assembly and Testing

- Responsible for Component Test Development and EOL
- Responsible to define Test Specifications for ECUs.
- Responsible for design, validate, build and provide EOL Tester to Contract Manufacturer (Duotec)
- Electrical, mechanical, loadbox, connectors and harnesses design responsible.
- Debug and validation of EOL prior installation on Contract Manufacturer side.
- Responsible for sustaining operations of EOL in series production.
You have:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or equivalent)
- 5+ years related work experience in highly complex safety-related electronics
- Hardware design experience in analog, digital, and mixed signals, and interfaces
- Deep technical understanding of electronic hardware, circuit and schematic design
- Deep technical understanding of balancing volume, weight, power density, thermal density, and cost
- Automotive experience (preferred)
- Experience working with electrical components and topologies such as: SOMs, SoCs, FPGAs, CPUs, MCUs, Radio Modules (BT, BLE, WiFi, GPS), SMPS, BJTs, MOSFETs, USB, I2C, SPI, DDRs, mSATA, M.2, PCIe, Ethernet, CAN, FPD, GSML and similar
- Computer literate with knowledge of Design Tools (Altium, OrCAD), Bills of Materials, (SAP), Configuration Management (3Dx), Jira and Microsoft Office suite
- Good interpersonal and technical writing skills
- Familiar with ASIL, IPC, ISO16949, ISO26262 standards.
Candidates must have current U.S. work authorization or be TN eligible from Mexico or Canada. This position is not eligible for CPT or OPT.
