The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an international nonprofit environmental organization with more than 3 million members and online supporters. With a highly effective team of more than 40 members based in our Beijing office, we have worked hard at both the national and local levels to recommend, develop, and support the implementation of innovative laws, policies, technologies, and market tools that curb pollution and accelerate China’s transition to a clean, low-carbon economy. NRDC's Beijing Representative Office is registered under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and supervised by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China in accordance with applicable laws.


NRDC is seeking a Nature-based Solutions Project Manager to work with the China Nature team in our Beijing office.


Position Summary


This Manager will work closely with the nature and international teams to develop nature-based climate solutions and opportunities and advance nature conservation and climate mitigation efforts within China and internationally. The Manager’s work will cover a broad spectrum of activities ranging from conducting technical and advisory analyses, to leading a field project, to presenting project results at conferences. The Manager will work with both China and U.S.-based team members and report to the China Conservation Director.

Responsibilities:
  • Identify nature-based policy and management opportunities to advance both biodiversity conservation and climate mitigation in China.
  • Identify, design and implement projects to advance biodiversity, climate and other NRDC priorities in China.
  • Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with relevant government agencies, scientific and research institutions, universities, local grassroots and other stakeholders.
  • Meet regularly with Chinese and international officials and academics to provide NRDC’s perspective on nature-based solution (NbS) issues and develop joint efforts to conserve nature. Advocate in furtherance of NRDC’s nature and climate goals with government officials, scientists, and others from various countries at international and domestic meetings.
  • Develop and write reports for NRDC analyzing laws, policies, and practices concerning forest carbon, NbS, and biodiversity and climate coordination.
  • Organize and attend relevant meetings, symposia, and conferences.
  • Develop fact sheets, blogs, and other materials on NbS in Chinese and translate documents from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese, as needed.
  • Occasional business travel required.
  • Other related duties assigned by the team.
Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in forestry or related environmental/natural resource studies.
  • Experience working in native ecosystem management.
  • Expertise or experience in forest-based carbon sequestration and ecosystem functioning.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic.
  • Proven technical abilities to research and recommend solutions for conservation and climate problems.
  • Experience working with Chinese government agencies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders (government, research institutes, other NGOs, industry, and local communities).
  • Clear communication skills with excellent English oral and written skills and high-level of technical writing proficiency.
  • Excellent public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of the team, with flexibility in taking international calls at odd hours.
