Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located in Golden, CO, is the nation’s leading laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
NREL’s Building Technologies and Science Center has an immediate opening for a Group Manager for the Building Performance Modeling Group. In this position, you will lead a group whose research focus is on building energy modeling to advance core energy modeling tools and building data ecosystems. Tools such as SEEDS, OpenStudio, EnergyPlus will be maintained and improved within this group with staff having a background in software development and building science. The GM's responsibilities include managing staff activities and NREL procedures and safety protocols, as well as conducting research activities or providing programmatic support. A group manager at NREL typically expects to work 65% of their time on their own independent research and have 35% of their time focusing on personnel.
Responsibilities include:
  • Manage work, resources and projects for the Group consistent with the goals of the Center, the Laboratory, and the NREL Buildings Program, including high visibility complex projects
  • Assist the Center Director in developing strategic plans and lead the implementation of strategic plans affecting the Group
  • Responsible for all safety issues affecting the group and a keen advocate of zero safety incidents within the laboratory
  • Lead building energy software development and engine development of tools such as UrbanOpt
  • Manage and lead the staff, budget, and planning activities of the Group
  • Recruit, develop, and retain staff necessary to accomplish the mission of the Group, Center, and Laboratory
  • Proactively develop and maintain the technical capabilities required to meet current and future research goals. Strategically develop the next generation of research ideas and promote these within the group
  • Play an active role in the hiring process, performance evaluation, and compensation recommendations
  • Manage all related systems and processes for the Group.
  • Participate in workforce planning
  • Manage and implement policies and systems that affect the Group, including systems for research, quality control, and quality assurance
  • Develop and conduct building research utilizing building energy modeling, laboratory experiments, and/or field validation
  • Interact frequently with internal and external management and high-level government and industry representatives regarding projects, operational decisions, scheduling requirements, and/or contract negotiations
  • Work closely with NREL managers and DOE technology managers to support the development of research within the Group
  • Develop project opportunities with DOE clients and ensure the success of these projects through the appropriate application of staff and facility resources
  • Establish and maintain productive external contacts and relationships in the scientific, university, government, utility, and industry sectors
  • Assist in the planning, development, and advancement of energy technologies and capabilities at NREL’s existing and new facilities
  • Lead efforts to diversify funding through relevant non-DOE business development, with emphasis on other federal agencies (e.g., DoD, Homeland Security, etc.), state and local governments, utilities, and industry (e.g., manufacturers, developers, etc.)
  • Be accountable for the Strategic Partnership Project targets set by the Center Director and meet the financial, staff planning and project objectives for the effort within building energy modeling research group
  • Lead briefings and technical meetings and actively seek external to NREL committee roles.
  • Write peer-reviewed journal papers and reports and give oral presentations to the NREL user community and at relevant national and international scientific meetings on topics related to building science

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and 9-years’ experience in technically related research discipline; Or, Master’s Degree and 7-years’ experience in technically related research discipline; Or, PhD and 4-years’ experience in technically related research discipline. Previous management and budget adherence experience and/or significant leadership in an individual required.

Research
  • A successful track record of independent research in a national laboratory or similar setting
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and evaluate research results of own work and that of others
  • Experience leading and contributing to programs in building energy technologies
  • Experience in building energy and data analysis software development
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the issues and best practices related to building energy science, building energy modeling, laboratory experiments, and/or field validation
  • Knowledge of the principles of building science
This position requires an onsite hybrid work arrangement and therefore is not seeking remote applicants.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in engineering (mechanical, chemical, or electrical), architecture, or a related technical or scientific discipline
  • Strong record of publications/presentations in areas relevant to NREL research
  • Demonstrated success working in a DOE-funded research environment and leading and developing innovative programs relevant to the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Group Research Manager II / Annual Salary Range: $114,500 - $206,100
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
