The Power Systems Modeling Compliance Engineer will be responsible for ensuring compliance with global utility standards, including RTOs and utilities in EMEA, Americas, and APAC for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and renewable generation assets. This candidate should have a deep understanding of power systems modeling, interconnection standards, regulatory compliance, and dynamic simulation tools such as PSCAD and PSS®E. The role will require interfacing with utilities, regulatory bodies, and internal engineering teams to ensure project compliance with NERC, FERC, and IEEE standards, as well as other regional utility interconnection requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Regulatory Compliance & Grid Interconnection:

    • Ensure compliance with NERC, FERC, IEEE, and international ISO/RTO interconnection requirements across EMEA, Americas, and APAC for BESS and renewable energy projects.

    • Support interconnection applications, studies, and regulatory filings with utilities and system operators.

    • Develop and maintain grid compliance documentation, including model validation reports and technical assessments.

  • OEM Model Vetting & Validation:

    • Evaluate OEM Power Plant Controller (PPC), inverter, and other dynamic models against regional utility requirements in the global regions including EMEA, Americas, and APAC.

    • Work closely with OEMs, utilities, and project developers to validate and verify performance of vendor-supplied models.

    • Conduct model benchmarking, sensitivity analysis, and validation testing to ensure compliance with interconnection requirements.

    • Assess control strategies and dynamic performance of OEM models in PSCAD, PSS®E, and PowerFactory environments.

  • Pre-Design & Post-Implementation Compliance Review:

    • Perform pre-design compliance assessments to identify risks and gaps in regulatory requirements.

    • Support after-the-fact compliance assessments, ensuring post-implementation performance aligns with interconnection agreements.

    • Collaborate with utilities and regulatory agencies to address model discrepancies and recommend necessary updates.

    • Assist in grid impact studies and compliance gap analysis for new and existing projects.

  • Stakeholder Coordination & Technical Support:

    • Work with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and regulatory agencies to address compliance-related inquiries.

    • Support project development teams with grid integration feasibility studies.

    • Collaborate with controls engineers to develop and validate grid-following and grid-forming control strategies.

Related Experience:

The ideal candidate will have domain experience in utility-scale energy storage, renewables, or power generation and must be proficient in the following:

  • Power Systems & Grid Compliance:

    • Expertise in North American interconnection requirements (IEEE 1547, NERC PRC, MOD, and BAL standards, FERC 661A, etc.).

    • Experience working with ISOs/RTOs and utilities across EMEA, Americas, and APAC on interconnection and compliance matters.

    • Strong understanding of power system protection, relay coordination, and grid stability.

    • Familiarity with BESS, inverter-based resources (IBRs), and renewable generation technologies.

  • Power System Modeling & Analysis:

    • Advanced experience with PSCAD, PSS®E, PowerFactory, and/or EMTP.

    • Model validation of inverter-based resources (IBRs), including BESS and PV systems.

    • Load flow, dynamic stability, and EMT simulations for grid compliance studies.

  • Testing & Implementation:

    • Experience with RTDS, Opal-RT, or other real-time simulation platforms for grid compliance verification.

    • Understanding grid-following and grid-forming inverter controls.

    • Familiarity with SCADA, utility communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850), and cybersecurity standards (NERC CIP, IEC 2700).

Personal Qualifications:

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present ideas and suggestions clearly and effectively to internal and external audiences.

  • A go-getter professional with a can-do attitude, setting aggressive and measurable goals, and ready to be evaluated against them.

  • A dynamic professional capable of interacting positively and collaborating with a diverse group of people at all levels and disciplines. Must be able to engage with key clients, think on their feet, and make sound decisions within compressed timelines.

  • Comfortable working in a collaborative and fluid environment.

  • Excellent time management skills, able to balance multiple projects and prioritize a variety of issues, initiatives, and objectives concurrently.

  • Disciplined and productive in an Agile environment.

  • Willingness to learn and work with tools outside the traditional stack, such as Anvil, Deepnote, and others.

  • A creative thinker, capable of developing novel solutions to established problems and evaluating their business benefits.

  • Business-savvy, able to interact with both business and technical specifications.

  • Willingness to travel up to 25%, including international travel.

  • 8+ years of experience developing control software with a track record of successful production deployments.
